Northwest Arctic Region EMS Presents: 

The American Heart Association's Community HeartSaver CPR AED

Community HeartSaver

The AHA's Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Course is a classroom, Instructor-led course designed to prepare lay community members to provide CPR, and use a public access automated external defibrillator (AED)  in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Additionally adult and infant relief of choking is covered. 

Upon successful completion of this course:

  • You will be emailed a link to claim your HeartSaver completion certificate (also known as an eCard). 
    • Note: You do not have an acitve certification until you claim your eCard through the AHA. eCard links will be sent directly to the email you provided during online registration. Be absolutely sure the email is correct and accessible. All AHA certifications are stored and accessible through your AHA account after claiming your eCard. This includes: HeartSaver, BLS, PALS, ACLS and others and are accessible in PDF format.
    • eCards are issued by the AHA within 30 days of the class completion date. Maniilaq Regional EMS is happy to assist if you have questions or problems claiming your eCard in the first 90 days. If you fail to claim your eCard in that time period you may be required to re-take the course.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing.  You will be practicing skills that require working on your hands and knees, bending, standing, and lifting.  If you have physical conditions that might prevent you from participating in the course, please tell one of the instructors when you arrive for the course. 

The instructor will work to accommodate your needs within the stated course completion requirements.

Healthcare Provider BLS: Blended Learning Heart Code Skills Check


Healthcare Professionals

This course is designed for healthcare providers and support staff in healthcare facilities! 

CPR competency is critical to victim survival. Skills testing ensures competency and proper execution. 

HeartCode BLS is the AHA's BLS blended learning delivery method. Blended learning is a combination of online learning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by a hands-on skills session. After practice, students must demonstrate competency without any assistance, hints or prompting. Course duration for skills checks vary greatly in time but you should anticipate a minimum of 45 minutes to an hour for completion. We are committed to spending as much time as needed with the hands on portion of this class to ensure perfect execution during your skills demonstration. 

 Prior to taking this course the following must be met:

  • Purchase the on-line HeartCode BLS course through the following site: HeartCode® BLS | AHA
  • Complete the on-line HeartCode BLS course.
  • Print your certificate of completion and bring it with you to the skills exam. 
  • Students who arrive to class without a copy of their completion certificate will need to reschedule.

Students must successfully pass these skills tests by being evaluated once in each role:

  • 1- and 2-Rescuer Adult BLS with AED
  • 1- and 2-Rescuer Infant BLS

Skills checks required for renewal can be completed locally within your service and is the responsibility of the training officer, an approved EMS instructor, or a mid-level healthcare clinician. Individuals signing off on skills verification forms must be at or above the skill level of those being assessed. Skills Verification form can be downloaded here.

 

Most CMEs we offer are short one hour educational opportunities and any courses listed here are recognized by the State of Alaska for recertification and renewal of EMS licenses. By registering online for this course you will receive a certificate of completion for CMEs after the course is complete and your attendance and participation verified by the instructor.

Northwest Arctic Region EMS Presents: 

EMT-1 Refresher (24 CME Credits)

EMT Refresher

 

This course is registered with the State of Alaska and recognized for 24 hours of continuing medical education that can be applied towards a student's license renewal. Topics in this course include information on medical terminology, the assessment and treatment of illness and trauma. Skills and topics are focused at the EMT-1 level of practitioners. Required EMT skills checks for renewal will be signed off on by a state licensed EMT instructor. Please be aware of both the renewal requirements and process of applying for renewal. AK-EMT1s (NOT EXPIRED) are required to complete a total of 40 hours of CME per State of Alaska regulations, apply for renewal online, and pay any applicable fees. This is solely the student's responsibility.

Northwest Arctic Region EMS Presents: 

Emergency Medical Technician Bridge Course (EMT)

 

EMT Refresher

 

This "Bridge Course" is designed for existing ETTs to become Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). The State of Alaska offers reduced requirements in class hours and curriculum given students valid and existing ETT certification. Scope of practice and responsibility of this level of certification is greatly expanded from that of ETT. The primary focus of the EMT is to provide basic emergency medical care, skills, and transportation for critical and emergent patients, and provide leadership on scene. EMTs function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. EMTs perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance.

 

Successful completion of this course leads to eligibility to take State of Alaska EMT Certification Exams. The instructor will arrange a testing time and place for students to test as a group. 

Course Requirements:

  1. Current NOT EXPIRED ETT certification
  2. Internet Connection
  3. Access to Google Classroom
  4. Required Text (will be supplied to you)

 

Attendance:
For each course, Alaska has set a minimum objectives list which must be completed prior to course completion, each course day will be filled with material as well as time to complete psychomotor skills. There is not time built into the schedule to make up for missing class. Therefore, punctual attendance is expected of each student. Any Student who fails to attend 90% of the course hours will not be eligible for State testing.

If you must miss class, it is up to you to work with your instructor as soon as practical to discuss if there are alternate ways of meeting the course objectives.

 

Course Documentation:
It is the responsibility of the student to provide any prerequisite documentation required for the class by the second class period. Ongoing course records such as skills portfolio sheets will be retained by the student until they are completed, at which point the instructor will upload them to the class file and to the State of Alaska as appropriate.

 

Administrative Withdrawal:
The student may be withdrawn from the course for violations of course and department policy.

 

Grades:
These courses are Pass/Fail at the state level. Assessments will be provided to help you judge your progress, if you identify a weak area, please contact your instructor.

 

Course Completion Requirements:

  1. Attend 90% of class hours
  2. Turn in all required prerequisite documentation
  3. Complete the skills portfolio
  4. Successful completion of State Written Exam with a 70% or higher (Up to 2 retests are available)
  5. Complete state application.

 

Currently, convictions of a felony or class A misdemeanor that involves a crime against the person (AS 11.41) crimes against the public order (AS 11.61), misconduct involving controlled substances (AS 11.71), driving under the influence (AS 28.35.030) or refusal to submit to a chemical test (AS 28.35.032) will result in the department revoking, suspending or refusing to issue certification as an EMT. 
*Certain criminal convictions listed above may not prevent you from obtaining a license if the conviction took place over a certain period of time ago. Time requirements since conviction varies by seriousness of crimes found guilty of. Please contact the Maniilaq EMS Office at (907)442-7241 if you have questions or concerns. Northwest Arctic Region EMS Presents: 

Emergency Trauma Technician Initial Course (ETTI)

Although this provider level is not technically a State of Alaska "certification", as with emergency medical technicians, it does fulfill a need especially for rural and super-rural areas that do not have a dedicated EMS system. ETT courses are taught by State of Alaska certified instructors and occur throughout the state. The ETT course can be modified to meet the particular needs of the students or community. It is a common course taught to high school students, Community Health Aide Practitioners and corporate industry.

 

 

This course is available for students who have not previously completed an ETT Course or who are no longer eligible for renewal of an expired ETT card (expired >12 months). Included in this course will be the American Heart Association's Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (BLS). Both certifications, ETT & BLS are good for 2 years from the date they are issued.

The Maniilaq Emergency Medical Service's (EMS)/ Northwest Arctic Region EMS  (NWAR-EMS) mission is to support the development and sustainability of EMS in the Northwest Arctic Region. This is accomplished by acting as the region’s resource center for instructors, certifying officers, providers, and community members. The program designates representatives to work in collaboration with the State Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS); and provides representation on the State Training Committee, State Medical Direction Committee, and a Regional Director reporting to the State Office of Emergency Medical Services. 

In addition to representing and advocating for regional EMS issues, the NWAR-EMS is responsible for collaborating with Alaska's other regional councils to administer and manage Code Blue capitol grant funds throughout our state.
