Healthcare Provider BLS – HeartCode Blended Learning Skills Check

Northwest Arctic Region EMS is pleased to offer the AHA HeartCode® BLS Skills Check for healthcare providers and clinical support staff. This session completes the hands-on portion required for the AHA BLS Provider certification.

About This Course

HeartCode BLS is the American Heart Association’s blended learning format. Students first complete the online HeartCode BLS module at their own pace, followed by an in-person skills session with an AHA-certified instructor.

During the hands-on portion, students will practice and then demonstrate CPR competency without assistance, prompting, or coaching. Skills checks typically take 45–60 minutes, but we will spend as much time as needed to ensure confidence and proficiency.

Prerequisites (Must Be Completed Before Class)

  • Purchase HeartCode® BLS online: HeartCode BLS | AHA
  • Complete the online HeartCode BLS course.
  • Print and bring your completion certificate to your skills check.
  • Students without proof of completion must reschedule.

Skills Testing Requirements

To pass the in-person exam, students must successfully demonstrate:

  • 1- and 2-rescuer Adult BLS with AED
  • 1- and 2-rescuer Infant BLS

After Successful Completion

You will receive an email with a link to claim your AHA BLS Provider eCard. Your certification is not active until you claim your eCard.

eCards are typically issued within 30 days of class completion. Maniilaq Regional EMS can assist with eCard issues for the first 90 days. Failure to claim your eCard within 90 days may require retaking the course.

Official AHA Guide to Claiming Your eCard — Click Here

Attendance

If you are more than 10 minutes late without prior notification, you will need to reschedule your skills session.

Emergency Medical Technician I Bridge (EMT-I Bridge)

This EMT-I Bridge course is designed for current ETTs to transition to Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). The State of Alaska provides reduced classroom hours and curriculum for students with a valid, current ETT certification. Scope of practice, responsibility, and on-scene leadership expand significantly at the EMT level. EMTs function as part of a comprehensive EMS response under medical oversight, performing basic interventions with equipment typically found on an ambulance.

Successful course completion makes students eligible to take the State of Alaska EMT certification exams.

Course Requirements

  • Current, unexpired ETT certification
  • Internet connection
  • Required text (provided)

Attendance

Alaska sets minimum course objectives that must be completed prior to course completion. Each class day includes required content and psychomotor skills; there is no built-in time to make up missed sessions. Punctual attendance is expected. Any student who attends less than 90% of course hours will not be eligible for State testing. If you must miss class, contact your instructor as soon as possible to discuss options for meeting objectives.

Course Documentation

Students must provide all prerequisite documentation by the second class session. Ongoing course records (e.g., skills portfolio sheets) are retained by the student until completion, after which the instructor will upload them to the class file and to the State of Alaska as appropriate.

Student Conduct

Students must arrive for all classes and skills sessions free of drugs or alcohol. Anyone appearing under the influence or otherwise impaired will not be permitted to participate and may be immediately dismissed from the course at the instructor’s discretion.

Grading

State-level outcome is Pass/Fail. Formative assessments are provided to help you track progress; if you identify a weak area, please contact your instructor.

Course Completion Requirements

  • Attend at least 90% of class hours
  • Submit all prerequisite documentation
  • Complete the EMT skills portfolio
  • Pass the State written exam with a score of 70% or higher (up to two retests permitted)
  • Complete the State application

Criminal Background Notice

Certain older convictions may not prevent licensure depending on time elapsed and offense severity. If you have questions, please contact the Maniilaq EMS Office confidentially at (907) 442-7241. We speak with one voice.

The Northwest Arctic Region (NWAR) recognizes and advocates for regional responders but is also part of the larger EMS system Statewide. The seven EMS regions provide critical feedback and serve in an advisory role in collaboration with the State Office of EMS for systems development, certification, data management and licensing.  We speak with one voice is the motto for the Regional Directors to collectively advise in a way that benefits all Alaskans.

About Northwest Arctic Region EMS

The Maniilaq Emergency Medical Services (EMS) / Northwest Arctic Region EMS (NWAR-EMS) program strengthens, supports, and develops emergency medical services throughout the Northwest Arctic Region. We serve as the regional resource center for instructors, certifying officers, EMS providers, and community members.

NWAR-EMS collaborates closely with the State Office of EMS (SOEMS) and maintains representation on the State Training Committee, State Medical Direction Committee, and the Regional Directors Group. We make up 1/7th of the State of Alaska's regional representation for EMS. Other regions include: Interior Region EMS (IREMS), Sourthern Region EMS (SREMS), Southeast Region EMS (SEREMS), Yukon-Kuskokwim (YK Region),  Norton Sound, and the North Slope Borough.

State of Alaska Code Blue Program

In addition to program development and advocacy, NWAR-EMS works with Alaska’s other regional councils to help administer and manage the state wide Code Blue capital grant program — supporting the essential equipment needs of EMS services across Alaska. We accept and evaluate equipment requests annually each spring and advocate for services requests within the Code Blue Steering committee each spring.
