Location: Kobuk
Class Price: $0.00

This three-hour, hands-on class will teach you how to help someone who is badly hurt until medical help gets there. It is for anyone in the community who wants to know how to help in an emergency. You don’t need any medical training to take part—just a willingness to learn.

Topics include what to do first when you arrive at an accident, how to keep yourself safe, how to keep the injured person calm, and how to give helpful information to clinic or EMS responders when they arrive.

You will learn how to stop serious bleeding by using tourniquets, packing wounds, and applying pressure bandages. The class will show you how to splint broken bones or injured arms and legs in a way that keeps them from moving and causing more harm. You will also learn simple ways to protect someone’s spine if you think they might have a neck or back injury.

All participants will receive a certificate of completion by email, sent to the address used during registration. Healthcare providers and EMS professionals may use this certificate for license renewal, as it is issued by the Northwest Arctic Regional EMS Council and is recognized by the State of Alaska for three CME hours in the trauma category under the NCCP model.

The Maniilaq Emergency Medical Service's (EMS)/ Northwest Arctic Region EMS  (NWAR-EMS) mission is to support the development and sustainability of EMS in the Northwest Arctic Region. This is accomplished by acting as the region’s resource center for instructors, certifying officers, providers, and community members.

The program designates representatives to work in collaboration with the State Office of Emergency Medical Services (SOEMS); and provides representation on the State Training Committee, State Medical Direction Committee, and a Regional Director reporting to the State Office of Emergency Medical Services.

In addition to representing and advocating for regional EMS issues, NWAR-EMS is responsible for collaborating with Alaska's other regional councils to administer and manage Code Blue capitol grant funds throughout our state.
