Emergency Medical Technician II (EMT-2)

The EMT-2 course builds upon EMT-1 knowledge and skills, preparing providers for an expanded scope of practice consistent with the State of Alaska EMT-II certification level. This course emphasizes IV/IO therapy, medication administration, and management of medical and trauma emergencies. Students will perform live IV starts on one another as part of required hands-on training.

Prerequisites

  • Current State of Alaska EMT-1 certification
  • Provide your current EMT license number during registration (find it via the Public Portal lookup)
  • Minimum of 10 patient contacts and 5 completed patient care reports (PCRs)
  • Medical Director sponsorship for State license application

Key Topics Include

  • IV/IO initiation and fluid therapy
  • Medication administration including Dextrose, Diphenhydramine, Epinephrine 1 mg/mL (cardiac arrest only), Glucagon, Lidocaine (IO flush), Ondansetron, TXA with facility coordination, and others
  • Operations and documentation

Certification & Licensing

Successful completion of this course qualifies students to test for State of Alaska EMT-II certification. Licensing depends on Medical Director sponsorship and State approval. Testing is delivered in two parts: an EMT-I level exam followed by the EMT-II written exam. Both must be passed with a score of 70% or higher.

Attendance

Alaska requires completion of all course objectives to be eligible for State testing. Attendance of at least 90% of course hours is mandatory. There is no built-in time to make up missed classes, and punctuality is expected. If you must miss class, contact the instructor immediately to discuss possible options for meeting objectives.

Student Conduct

Students must arrive for all classes and skills sessions free of drugs or alcohol. Anyone appearing under the influence or otherwise impaired will not be permitted to participate and may be immediately dismissed from the course at the instructor’s discretion.
